Family Learning Adventures is an environmental education outreach collaboration that was created by Roger Pinholster. Allison Crews & her son Gregory Gibbs, joined the project during the pandemic and all three are now State Park volunteers. The mission of Family Learning Adventures is to help families explore and learn about the natural environment of Central Virginia.
Family Learning Adventures will kick-off their 4th season at Twin Lakes State Park & Powhatan State Park soon...
These fun exploratory, hands-on activities for school-aged children come in backpacks and plastic tubs that can be checked out for the day or overnight for families that are camping. Naturalist and educator Roger Pinholster will be there to assist you in selecting your pack and answer any questions you have.
The packs are free to check out. A staff member will coach and guide the entire family on how to use the materials and equipment. The pack's activities focus on Virginia's wildlife and natural environment. Topics include hours of learning on: amphibians and reptiles, birds, insects, mammals, rocks, trees, and the newest addition…predators!
To locate the FLA folks each Saturday just check the park calendar or ask at the entry gate when you arrive at the park.
Family Learning Adventures is scheduled to alternate 1st and 3rd Saturdays at Powhatan State Park, while offering programming at Twin Lakes State Park 2nd and 4th Saturdays through their summer season.
